What does it look like when curiosity, culture, and community come together in a classroom? We had the joy of finding out during a vibrant half-day workshop with the P1 and P2 students of Fuk Wing Street Government Primary School. In partnership with the dedicated Garden Volunteer Team, we set out to explore the rich and diverse world of our non-Chinese neighbours right here in Hong Kong.
Our goal was simple: to move beyond textbook lessons and create shared, memorable experiences. The response from the students was incredible and a powerful reminder of why this work is so important.
A Morning of Stories and Surprises
Our day began with the sound of laughter as students learned to say "hello" in several of the languages spoken throughout our city. This simple act of greeting is more than just an icebreaker; it’s the first step in showing children that different languages are something to be celebrated. It set a warm, inclusive tone for the main event: an exciting storytelling session.
We whisked the students away on an imaginative journey across Hong Kong, sharing tales that brought the experiences of different communities to life. By following the footsteps of characters in the story, students were able to build a tangible connection to the lives of people with different backgrounds.
Cultural Connections through Food
The session ended with a hands-on activity centered around food. By exploring different cultural preparations of dumplings and rice, students discovered a beautiful lesson: while our traditions might look and taste different, the things that bring us together—family, food, and celebration—are often the same.
A Festive Afternoon Fair!
The energy soared in the afternoon as we transformed the space into a bustling fun fair. This vibrant marketplace of discovery had something exciting happening in every corner. The room was alive with activity as students moved between experiences like sensory stations with spices and mystery boxes, and creative corners for arts and crafts inspired by festivals like Diwali.
Bilingual Books: A Gateway to Diversity
We were especially proud of our cozy reading nook, which featured a special collection of bilingual books. This collection was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Room to Read. These unique books are created specifically to showcase the diversity of Hong Kong, allowing children to see their cultures and experiences reflected in the stories they read.
The sounds of play resonated throughout the space, from teamwork in a three-legged race to the fun of traditional games like Chunggi, a popular game from Nepal. It was a complete multi-sensory experience where learning occurred through taste, touch, creativity, and active play.
An Impact You Could See and Feel
The smiles on the students' faces said it all, but the formal feedback confirmed it. When asked how interesting they found the workshop, an overwhelming majority of the 120 young participants gave the day the highest possible ratings.
Events like these are a powerful reminder that empathy and understanding are built through connection. By creating a space for joyful, interactive learning, we can plant the seeds of a more inclusive and welcoming community for the next generation. It’s our passion to help schools create these moments of discovery. It's even better when we collaborate with like-minded individuals who are enthusiastic about making CommUnity a reality in our city!
