What does it take for a city to truly feel like home? This past year, we explored that question through our 2023-24 Chinese, Cultural, and Community Education Programme. By weaving together language and culture, we aimed to help students not only learn Cantonese but also foster a deep and joyful sense of belonging in Hong Kong.
With the incredible support of 110 dedicated tutors for 62 students, the results were heartwarming. At the start of the year, less than half of our students strongly felt that Hong Kong was their home. By the end, that number soared to 75%.
Remarkable Progress in Students' Language Skills
The progress we witnessed was remarkable. Pre- and post-assessments for 38 students showed a significant leap in their language skills. Across the board, students saw their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities improve, with a majority advancing one or more proficiency levels. The data tells a clear story: our students didn't just learn—they thrived, building a stronger foundation in Chinese.
Learning Comes to Life
Our curriculum was designed to be both practical and playful, with themes covering everything from family and school life to transportation and occupations. The absolute highlight of the year was a special visit from the Fire Services Department! Students practised firefighting vocabulary, learned about fire trucks, and even got to try on the uniforms. This hands-on experience sparked incredible motivation and brought the language to life in a way a textbook never could.
Beyond the Classroom: Stories of Heartfelt Growth
Beyond the numbers, our tutors witnessed a quiet blossoming of confidence. They saw students begin to use more vocabulary, construct fuller sentences, and even ask to learn extra words.
This growth was felt at home, too. Parents shared heartwarming stories of progress, noting that their children were speaking Cantonese more confidently with friends. One parent told us their child, who had previously disliked Chinese, was so inspired by the program that they chose to buy a Chinese book at the book fair—a small moment that speaks volumes.
A Huge Thank You to Our Tutors!
This incredible journey would not have been possible without our team of volunteer tutors. We are immensely grateful to every person who dedicated their Saturday mornings to bring fun and engaging classes to our students. Their passion and patience made a tangible difference in the lives of these young learners.
We look forward to continuing this important work of building connections and making CommUnity a Reality in our city!
